It has been a very busy and productive first half of the school year. Staff, students, School Council and the German Bilingual Association have accomplished a great deal in making Mills Haven A Great Place to Be. We had our first school dance in several years organized by School Council during the month of October where several families came together for fun and community building. We also had Oktoberfest and the St. Martin walk organized by the German Bilingual Association which provided more opportunities for Mills Haven families to get together. In November families enjoyed the Rustic Sign Night where families had the opportunity to create their own sign with a Christmas message for the holidays.
Students have been working hard over the last four months gaining the skills needed to be successful when they enter the world of work such as critical thinking, problem-solving, creativity and innovation, communication, collaboration, global citizenship, managing information and their own well-being. I encourage parents to ask your children what they are learning in school. Sometimes students will respond by saying “not much” or “I don’t know.” But if you ask them specifically what they have learned in a class such as Science, they may be more open to describing what they have learned.
Mills Haven will continue to be a hub of activities for students throughout the school. Try-outs for track have been completed and runners are preparing to compete at the Journal Indoor Games. Mr. Zukiwsky has started try-outs for the 3 on 3 basketball team. Expectations are high for the boys and girls after the fantastic season they had last year. Soon the gym will be filled with the sights and sounds of students playing games in the Mills Haven floor hockey league.
As always we are happy to see parents and Guardians volunteering at our school. Next year Karen Willis will no longer be volunteering at our school for the milk program. If you are interested in taking on this role please contact the office.
2018 was a great year and thank you for letting us educate your children. Mills Haven is a Great Place to Be and we look forward to working with our Mills Haven community. All of us at Mills Haven wish you a happy and healthy 2019.
Mr. G. Russell
